Schools & Daycares
Low-Maintenance, Clean, and Safe Turf Solutions Designed with Kids in Mindby Carolina Turf Systems
Schools and daycare facilities need outdoor spaces that can handle constant activity without becoming muddy, worn down, or difficult to maintain. We design and install artificial turf systems for high-use school and childcare environments throughout the Charlotte metro and surrounding areas of North and South Carolina.
Our installations are planned around playground equipment, daily foot traffic, drainage, accessibility, fall protection requirements, and ongoing maintenance. From daycare play yards and school playgrounds to courtyards and outdoor classrooms, we handle the full installation process from site preparation through turf installation and finishing.
Artificial Turf vs. Other Playground Surfaces
Schools and childcare facilities have several surfacing options, each with different maintenance and durability considerations.
Natural Grass
Natural grass can work in lower-traffic areas, but playgrounds and daycare yards often wear down around swings, slides, gates, and common walking paths. Bare soil, mud, reseeding, mowing, watering, and repeated repairs can become ongoing maintenance issues.
Wood Fiber and Rubber Surfacing
Engineered wood fiber can provide appropriate fall protection when installed and maintained at the required depth, but loose material shifts and often needs to be redistributed or replenished.
Rubber surfacing can also provide strong impact attenuation. Poured-in-place systems offer a uniform surface but generally carry a higher upfront cost, while loose rubber mulch can experience many of the same displacement issues.
Artificial Turf
Artificial turf provides a consistent grass-like surface designed to handle heavy daily use. Playground systems can incorporate shock-absorbing padding, appropriate infill, drainage, and a prepared base based on the requirements of the space. Unlike natural grass, turf does not develop muddy worn areas, and unlike loose-fill surfaces, it stays in place during normal use.
Safety Standards for Playground Turf
Playground turf is different from a standard landscape installation.
Areas around elevated equipment may require impact-attenuating surfacing based on equipment height and layout. ASTM F1292 is commonly used to evaluate impact attenuation for playground surfaces, while ASTM F1951 addresses accessibility for people using mobility devices.
For playground installations that require fall protection, we design the turf system around the specific site and equipment. Depending on the application, that can include shock-absorbing padding, appropriate infill, base preparation, drainage, and transitions around equipment.
The turf, padding, infill, base, and installation all need to work together as a complete system.
Artificial Turf for Playgrounds and Daycare Play Yards
Playgrounds and daycare yards experience some of the most concentrated foot traffic on a property. Areas around equipment, gates, seating, and activity zones can deteriorate quickly when surfaced with natural grass.
We prepare the site, address drainage, construct the appropriate base, and install turf around the existing layout. For areas requiring impact attenuation, the system can also incorporate shock-absorbing padding based on the needs of the project.
Daycare spaces can be designed around play structures, fencing, seating, shaded areas, and separate activity zones for different age groups.

Recess Areas, Courtyards and Outdoor Classrooms
Artificial turf can also be used in school recreation areas, courtyards, outdoor classrooms, and other spaces where natural grass is difficult to maintain.
Shaded courtyards, compacted high-traffic lawns, and spaces between buildings may struggle to support healthy grass. Turf creates a consistent surface without relying on sunlight, irrigation, or recovery between periods of use.
For larger athletic or multi-use areas, we also install commercial sports turf.
Drainage and Site Preparation
The performance of a commercial turf installation depends heavily on what is underneath it.
We evaluate the existing grade, soil conditions, drainage, surrounding pavement, playground equipment, and other site features before installation. The area is excavated as needed and prepared with a compacted aggregate base that provides stability while allowing water to move through the system.
Drainage is particularly important for schools and daycares because play areas often need to return to use quickly after rain.
Built for Heavy Daily Use
School and daycare turf receives repeated traffic in the same locations every day.
We account for those traffic patterns when preparing the base, positioning seams, securing edges, and installing infill. High-use areas around equipment, entrances, and pathways need to be built for repeated activity rather than treated like a standard lawn.
Facility Appearance and Parent Perception
Outdoor spaces are a visible part of a school or childcare facility. Parents see playgrounds and play yards during tours, drop-off, pickup, and events.
Artificial turf provides a consistent appearance without mowing, fertilizing, reseeding, or irrigation. For facility operators, it creates an outdoor environment that is easier to maintain while keeping play and recreation areas looking cared for throughout the year.
Ongoing Turf Maintenance
Artificial turf requires less routine maintenance than natural grass, but school and daycare installations still need regular care.
Typical maintenance includes debris removal, brushing high-traffic areas, maintaining infill levels, cleaning spills, and inspecting seams and edges.
We also provide commercial turf maintenance for facilities that want professional support after installation.
Artificial Turf Installation Across the Charlotte Area
We install artificial turf for schools, daycares, preschools, childcare centers, churches, and other educational facilities throughout Charlotte and surrounding communities in North and South Carolina, including Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Waxhaw, Huntersville, Fort Mill, Indian Land, and Rock Hill.
Schedule an On-Site Consultation
If your school or childcare facility is considering artificial turf for a playground, play yard, recess area, courtyard, or outdoor classroom, we can evaluate the property and recommend an installation approach based on how the space will be used.
